Café Sperl
Mariahilf kaffeehaus since 1880, UNESCO-listed interior, billiard tables intact.
Mariahilfer Straße shopping spine + Café Sperl heritage + Mast natural-wine bistro
Mariahilf, the 6. Bezirk, runs west of the Innere Stadt along the Mariahilfer Straße shopping spine, Vienna's busiest pedestrian street. Side-streets carry the city's contemporary bistro scene: Mast Weinbistro at the Naschmarkt end, the small kitchens around Spittelberg's cobbled lanes one bezirk further north. Café Sperl on Gumpendorfer Straße, since 1880, listed by UNESCO as part of the protected Viennese kaffeehaus culture, is the institution that fixes the neighbourhood's older register. The traveller uses Mariahilf for the shopping-into-lunch axis along Mariahilfer Straße, the Sperl Melange before a Naschmarkt walk, and the Mast evening that does not require a 6. Bezirk jacket.
