Steep slope linking Taksim to Dolmabahçe with 19th-century apartment blocks
Gümüşsuyu is the steep hillside that drops from Taksim down to Dolmabahçe, its spine being the long İnönü Caddesi that once carried trams between the square and the palace. The 19th-century apartment blocks along the slope were built for Ottoman officials and foreign merchants and now house consulates, small hotels, and quiet restaurants with sudden Bosphorus views. Istanbul Technical University's historic Taşkışla building, designed by W. J. Smith in 1853, crowns the top of the district.
