Post-industrial and design-forward
Testaccio-Ostiense
Post-industrial Rome of gasometers, street art and a young bar-bistro scene south of the centre.
South of the centre, Ostiense is post-industrial Rome at its most design-forward: the looming gasometer, dense street art, the sculpture-in-a-power-station of Centrale Montemartini, the Eataly flagship and a credible scene of bars and bistros. Grittier and younger than the historic core, it reads as the contemporary counterweight to the city's classical postcard, the place where Rome experiments rather than preserves.
