Lutter & Wegner on Charlottenstraße at the Gendarmenmarkt corner is the wine merchant August Friedrich Lutter and Christian Wegner opened in 1811, the German word Sekt for sparkling wine reportedly originated in this room (the legend has the actor Ludwig Devrient ordering 'Sekt' from a line of Falstaff). The current restaurant runs as a classic Berlin Wirtshaus-meets-brasserie with the Wiener Schnitzel as the marker order, an Austrian-German menu of consistent classics, and one of the older wine cellars in central Berlin. The location at Gendarmenmarkt is the second part of the booking, the square itself is one of the most ornamental in the city.
