One of the twelve Ionian cities, Erythrai crowns the 88-metre acropolis above Ildırı with a 3rd-century-BC theatre cut into the north slope, the Temple of Athena Polias, Hellenistic house foundations and five kilometres of city walls. The climb delivers the ruins-with-a-view that defines the village, Chios and the bay laid out below, almost no crowds off-season. Free and open access; the cultural anchor of any Ildırı visit.
