Monastiraki
Monastiraki design-and-courtyard cultural venue, coffee by day, cocktails by night, programmed concerts.
Praxitelous all-day cocktail bar, top-50-bar canon, Athens' canonical drinks address.
The Clumsies opened in 2014 on Praxitelous between Syntagma and Monastiraki, in a converted three-storey neoclassical, and entered the World's 50 Best Bars list the same year, has held a top-ten position several cycles since. Vassilis Kyritsis and Nikos Bakoulis run the program. The ground floor is the casual front room (espresso from 10:00, lunch plates, the standing list); the back room is the more serious cocktail bar with the seasonal menu; the first floor is the private dining and tasting space. The crowd here uses The Clumsies as the canonical Athens drinks address, the first booking on a multi-day trip, the structural reference point for the rest of the city's bar scene.
Book the back room for the seasonal cocktail menu, the front room runs the standing list and is busier. The Praxitelous block is well-lit and walkable from Syntagma metro.
