Benusen has worked the Kadıköy çarşı since 1974, founded by Mevlüt Öztunç, and the case still carries things most meyhanes have dropped: topik, çiroz, a mustard-sauced levrek marin among thirty-odd mezes. The five-piece fasıl plays upstairs on weekends while the ground floor stays a drinking-and-talking room, which is exactly the right division of labor. Prices remain from another decade. If the çarşı has an institution left in the old sense, it is this one.
Order the topik if it is in the case; almost nobody makes it anymore. Sit downstairs for conversation, upstairs on a weekend if you came for the fasıl.
