Schwabing Literary Morning, Tantris Evening
From a Reitschule breakfast through the Englischer Garten beer gardens to Tantris, Munich's great long Sunday
Bar Tapas
Stand at the bar with a glass of fino and three or four hot tapas (gambas al ajillo, croquetas de jamón, the daily pulpo if it's on) before deciding whether to stay for dinner. The Iberico-and-Manchego board is the right opener for a group. The Amalienstraße location is the original, there's a sister room called Tapas Teatro elsewhere; this is the one.
Amalienstraße 97, 80799 München
Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm
On the Hofbräuhaus filter: this is technically a Hofbräu garden, but a beer garden in a public park is a fundamentally different audience contract from a tourist tavern with a brass band programmed to a coach schedule. The Chinese tower passes; the Platzl tavern does not.
Englischer Garten 3, 80538 München
Condesa
Order the al pastor and the carnitas tacos, a side of guacamole, and a mezcal-based drink to start. The Münchner Freiheit branch is the original and best, the Hauptbahnhof and Implerstraße locations are quicker stops. No reservations; lunch is fast, dinner has a wait on weekends.
Münchner Freiheit 6, 80802 München
