Condesa
Schwabing
Authentic Mexican tacos and quesadillas at Münchner Freiheit.
Munich's first proper tapas bar, on Amalienstraße since 1995.
Bar Tapas opened on Amalienstraße in 1995, making it the original tapas bar in Munich and still the address Spanish locals recommend over the imitators that followed. The room is a long narrow space with high tables at the front and a proper sit-down section at the back, ingredients flown in regularly from Spain, Iberico, Manchego, boquerones, gambas al ajillo, tortilla, fresh pulpo when it lands. Around forty tapas on the daily card, all made fresh; the wine list runs deep on Spanish bottles, with a tight sherry programme. It's loud, casual, easy, the antidote to Munich's tendency to over-formalise dinner. Walk-in works at the bar; book ahead for the back room on weekends.
Stand at the bar with a glass of fino and three or four hot tapas (gambas al ajillo, croquetas de jamón, the daily pulpo if it's on) before deciding whether to stay for dinner. The Iberico-and-Manchego board is the right opener for a group. The Amalienstraße location is the original, there's a sister room called Tapas Teatro elsewhere; this is the one.
