Mayfair
JKS Restaurants' two-Michelin-star Indian on Albemarle Street, Trishna's older Mayfair sister and the standard against which the rest measure themselves.
Northern Chinese on level 33 of The Shard, the view-room and the dish where guests in town for a single weekend take their out-of-town parents.
Hutong sits 33 floors above London Bridge in The Shard, with a Hong Kong sister of the same name and a kitchen that leans north, Beijing duck carved tableside, dan dan noodles, dry-aged Cantonese roast, Sichuan heat through pickled chillies and Shanghainese xiao long bao. The cooking is more ambitious than the view-restaurant cliché suggests, but the room is the order: book a window seat at sunset and the city is laid out underneath you from St Paul's to Canary Wharf. The Shanghai Bar at the entrance is a credible pre-dinner martini in its own right.
Specify a window seat when booking, non-window tables exist and the entire point of Hutong is the panorama. Book the Beijing duck twenty-four hours ahead with the reservation; it is a separate request, not a menu order. Sunset table 19:00 in summer, 16:30 in winter.
