Artà

Artà is an inland town in the island's north-east, its tangle of streets climbing toward the fortified sanctuary of Sant Salvador that crowns the hill above the rooftops. It feels authentically Mallorcan and largely unbothered by the coast a few kilometres away, a working town with a fine Tuesday market, old bakeries and a slow, dignified pace. The eating reflects that grounding: a respected bakery-restaurant carrying on long traditions and a refined country-hotel kitchen on the edge of town, both rooted in the surrounding land. Artà rewards anyone who wants the island's interior rather than its shoreline.
