Holy Home
Glockenbachviertel
Reichenbachstrasse dive, red walls, dim lights, hipster shrine
Munich's oldest civic-house, beer garden, blues nights, poetry slams since 1979
The institution that gave Glockenbachviertel its name and its political backbone. Founded 1979 as Munich's first Bürgerhaus, the Werkstatt still runs as a self-organised socio-cultural centre, a low-key pub with a courtyard beer garden out back, programming that swings from poetry slam to blues to queer disco depending on the night. Concrete-floor honesty, not a curated bar. This is the rare Munich room where the price of a beer hasn't tracked the rent index, and the regulars include actual artists.
Check the calendar before you go, the room transforms by the night. Beer garden opens at 17:00 in summer.
