Where to Eat in Naples?
Naples reads on two tracks that rarely overlap on a map but define the city completely: pizza and the bay. The art of the Neapolitan pizzaiuolo was inscribed on UNESCO's intangible-heritage list in 2017, and the city treats it as a civic discipline rather than a tourist attraction. Above it sits a small, serious fine-dining tier that has finally caught up to the rest of Campania, anchored by the harbourfront kitchens and the seafood houses of Chiaia and Posillipo.
Geography sorts it cleanly. The Centro Storico and Forcella hold the canonical pizzerias, where L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele in Forcella has run on numbered tickets since 1870 and Gino Sorbillo Antica Pizzeria works the historic spine. The modern pizza wave spreads outward: Concettina ai Tre Santi in Rione Sanita, La Notizia di Enzo Coccia in Fuorigrotta, 50 Kalo di Ciro Salvo in Mergellina, 10 Diego Vitagliano in Bagnoli. Chiaia is the elegant register, home to George Restaurant and the seafood institution Ristorante da Dora, while Porto carries the headline fine dining at Il Ristorante Alain Ducasse Napoli and Aria Restaurant.
Pizza City, Then the Bay
The split is the point. A margherita or marinara at the historic pizzerias still runs a few euros, and the ticket queues are real at peak hours. At the top end, Il Ristorante Alain Ducasse Napoli sits on the ninth floor of Hotel ROMEO with Vesuvius and the bay in full view; Veritas in Centro reads modern Campanian, and Caracol out at Bacoli works the same register over the water. The through-line is the same ingredient base, expressed at opposite prices.
Reservation Tips
The fine-dining rooms want two to three weeks, more for a weekend table with a sea view, and the harbourfront terraces fill earliest in summer. The landmark pizzerias don't take bookings the way the rest of the city does; go for an early or late sitting and expect a numbered ticket at da Michele. Spring and early autumn are the kind weeks, before the August heat and the coastal day-trip crowds peak.
