Pangrati
Athens' canonical two-Michelin-star room, Pangrati side street, restored neoclassical, classical-French foundation.
Athens institution since 1920, Piraeus-port origin, contemporary chef-led set menu, family fourth generation.
Vassilenas opened in Piraeus in 1920, Winston Churchill ate here in 1944, the Onassis-and-Niarchos generation made it the canonical Athenian dinner, and the family moved the restaurant to Kolokotroni in Voula in the current millennium, then back to a central Athens address on Aiolou in 2014 when the fourth-generation chef Yorgos Vassilenas took the kitchen. The format today is a single chef-led tasting menu, twelve to fifteen courses, with Greek-Mediterranean technique applied to the recipe collection the family has been refining for a hundred and five years. The Michelin Guide lists Vassilenas in the 2026 Greece selection. Fewer reservations come heavier with cultural-context dining attached than this one.
Set tasting menu only, no à la carte. Book two weeks ahead. The family will, on request, tell the room's history through the menu, a Churchill course and a 1960s Niarchos-table course among them.
