Café Luigi Tambosi
Altstadt-Lehel
Munich's oldest café since 1775, Italian roots, Hofgarten terrace.
Sixth-floor café on Marienplatz, direct sightline to the carillon.
Café Glockenspiel sits at Marienplatz 28, sixth floor, with windows that look directly across to the Neue Rathaus tower and the Glockenspiel carillon, the eleven and twelve o'clock chimes happen at eye level from the front tables. The room is sober, white tablecloths, an all-day menu of breakfast, Italian-leaning lunches and a competent wine list. The room earns its position with the view, not the cooking, but the cooking is honest, and the booking strategy of arriving thirty minutes before noon lets you eat through the carillon. Reservations recommended for the front window in season.
Book the front window for 11:30 to catch the noon carillon. The lift is at the back of the corner building, the entrance is unobtrusive. If the booking is mid-room or back-room, ask to be moved at the door. The menu is competent, not destination, the room is paid for in view.
