Cédric Grolet, the Le Meurice-trained pastry chef who reframed what a fruit tart could be, opened his first London counter at The Berkeley in 2023. The hyper-realistic fruit sculptures (a hazelnut that is not a hazelnut, a lemon that is not a lemon) sit alongside hand-laminated viennoiserie at breakfast and a seated afternoon-pastry service that runs until early evening. The room is small and faces Wilton Place; bookings open thirty days ahead and the Saturday morning slot is the one to chase. The crowd that has queued at Opéra in Paris already knows the register.

Editor's Tip

Bookings open thirty days ahead at 09:00 GMT and the Saturday slots fall within an hour. Walk-in pastry counter for take-away available before opening, queue from 08:30. Order the seasonal fruit and one viennoiserie; do not over-order.
